Creating a room with primary colors…

As a designer, one of the first things that I was taught was the color wheel.  All of the colors in color theory are produced by first starting with the primary colors of red, blue and yellow and mixing them until the desired color is reached.  This color combination has a history in design which has been relevant  to a lot of different movements.  From the very traditional look, such as country french to the very contemporary DeStijl movement, this color combination has made statements in design throughout history.

Country French Interiors

When companies like Pierre Deux turned this look commercial all of us were then able to enjoy the primary combination in a very traditional form.  By the blending of regal and rustic details,  enhanced by the peasant farmers’ countryside look in France, the company helped to develop this interior design movement which is now used world wide.  This look incorporates many different patterns which vary in scale and design but repeat the same colors.  The furniture has many Rocco ornamental features, so that the ornate qualities are light- hearted  and elegant thus enhancing the overall design of the interior space. The look, Country French, comes in a number of color combinations, but the most common pairing of this look is the red, blue, and yellow – the primary colors!

De Stijl Movement Interiors

In the realm of design, there was a movement which incorporated the color combination of red, blue, and yellow called the DeStijl Movement.   Influenced by artist and architects of the Dutch period neoplasticism, this look focused on straight lines and color theory placement.

For the average person, this design may be too “artsy chic” for your interior space because it leaves the home feeling cold and uninviting because the interior appears to be too crisp and clean.  But if you are drawn to this design, and would like to create a  room which is influenced by this movement, then a suggestion would be to work your furniture around an artwork which has a resemblance to a Mondrian masterpiece leaving your room feeling soothing yet sophisticated.

Color plays an important part of our lives and has proven to affect our moods as well as our ability to learn.  When designing a room for children, this knowledge  may help you design in a way using colors which help the development of your child’s brain.  Creating a room that is inspired by primary colors allows the space to become inviting and inspiring as well as a fun and entertaining learning environment.  Focusing on color theory incorporates design, and may push to inspire logical designing techniques through inspired artistic projects.

Creating a Fusion Interior…

Most of us don’t necessarily design our interior spaces with the intention of staying trendy.  We develop our homes’ interiors over the years by gathering items throughout our lifetime.  Regardless if it’s a chair which has been passed down to us by a relative or a throw that was on sale at your local department store, we collect items which may not always match each other.

If you can find a common relationship with the items, you can create a room which we describe as a fusion interior.  We see this idea popping up in many retail stores.  It is the merging of two items which normally would not be paired together.  Although in an interior space you will have more than two items in a room, the idea of fusion means incorporating two or more different styles.  The merging of contemporary and traditional are the most common styles which have fused together in today’s design schemes.  Creating a look that is referred to as eclectic is one of the leading trends and a great way to keep the things that may be sentimental or special to you.

Fushion Interior

In the photo above, we notice that this interior space starts with a loft style interior. The base, which includes concrete floors and masonry walls, gives  this space a very industrial feel. Although the dwelling’s owners could have designed the space with very clean lined furniture  to enhance the contemporary feel of the look, which would have been typical, they have chosen to use items which they have collected to create an eclectic feel.  The juxtaposition of the wide variety of chairs  in this space creates hierarchy because none of the chairs are from the same era.  By using several items which were both unique and different in style, as well as functional, and fusing them together particular space portrays a very unique but put together look.

Whimsical Fusion Interior

Whimsical Fusion Interior

Although many designers believe that having a set of items is more aesthetically pleasing to the eye, they often don’t realize that fusing a variety of items  in the space can develop more character.  The idea of blending what you already own is great for someone who is on a budget or some who is artsy.  Since this look is asymmetrical,  it will  look most appropriate with an interior which has a great architectural skeleton and a space whose base is neutral in color tone.   The reason for this is that it will allow the variety of items in the interior to shine and the small gems found will be noticed and appreciated.

For those who collect unique furniture pieces, which is perfect for this fusion look, Fabrics and Frames can help you ensure the lifetime of the item while enhancing its look.  Specializing in restoration of upholstered furniture, we are able to save items which need  structural support.  Regardless if  it is a wobbly antique chair, or seat that has fallen through, we can repair it so that it is better than new.  After being in the industry for 35 years, we have become experts at restoring antique pieces. Once we restore your older piece it  can last not only your lifetime but be ready to pass down to the next generation to create their own fusion style!

Exploring Generations of Contemporary Design

In 1919, a school by the name of Bauhaus emerged pushing designs which did not fit the norm.  The teachings by modernist designers professed the idea of getting rid of ornamental features  and bringing more linear clean lines to design.  This opened a door for future designs to emerge leading to what we consider contemporary design.

As the different forms of contemporary design started to unfold, you could really start to see the modern impact that would take hold by the late 1930′s.  The United States was coming out of the depression and individuals were seeking a way to show that they were moving towards a brighter future.  Charles and Ray Eames were two of the innovators who pushed the idea of “affordable” contemporary furniture for the modern home.  By creating architecture and furniture which was more organic and economical for the average consumer, they  helped to create the look that we more commonly refer to as mid-century modern furniture.

Mid-century furniture

Mid-century furniture

As the continuation of contemporary furniture evolved, the sleek linear lines remained.  Fabrics changed through the years but the styles remained similar.  Commonly found on mid-century furniture were tweeds and Herculean wool fabrics which enhanced the sleek lines of the furniture piece.

In the 1980′s more asymmetrical styled furniture started to emerge.  Keeping the linear lines in mind, this look referred back to classic design from the Art Deco period and De stijl  period to create a look which was considered quite contemporary.  Commonly creating pieces which were upholstered in a bright colored velvet, Ultrasuede, or bold pattern geometric, this look in design proved to not be a memorable period for innovation.

As we approach more modern day contemporary styles, we generally are conflicted as to whether we should call the current style eclectic, transitional, or sleek chic modern.  The most innovative contemporary style would be considered sleek contemporary because it pushes boundaries of classic styles. These designs often disregard the “no ornament” rule by including tufts or other surface details and opt to create a merging of styles.  Although the overall look generally maintains clean lines and minimal appearance, we do see that a “bubble” trend is beginning to be a popular contemporary look.

Merging the “Color of the Year” Colors Together

Every year Pantone chooses a list of colors which sets the trend for fashion, interiors, and merchandising.  With this in mind, we tend to see that everything around us in fashion and design is geared toward the particular chosen colors.  For some, this is great because it allows them to update their look and refresh their lifestyle.  For others, it seems to be a little wasteful  to try and update their style every year with a certain color combination.   By reviewing the  colors over the past few years you can see how the color trends have merged together thus making it easier and less expensive to remain current in your home design.

2011 Pink Chairs with 2013 Emerald interior space

2011 Pink Chairs with 2013 Emerald interior space

For the past three years (2011,2012,2013) the three “colors of year” were honey suckle pink, tango tangerine, and Emerald.  The balance of the color has remained on a even keel, allowing the designer to keep some of the favorite pieces of the past years and adding a touch of new items for the next year to keep current.  Updating the look doesn’t have to be a total makeover, but just an enhancement in trendsetting.

2011Pink and 2012 Orange Interior Colors

2011 Pink and 2012 Orange Interior Colors

Recently I have notice the trend of pink and orange merging in interior spaces once again.  As someone in the industry, I have seen this look for three years, but currently notice that it is one of the latest trends for the average consumer. This is a great thing because it allows those individuals who keep up with statement interior spaces to re-use some older pieces but enhance with fun pillows that incorporate this years color of the year, emerald.

2013 Emerald Green with 2012 orange interior space

2013 Emerald Green with 2012 Orange interior space

The original idea to merge these two colors together seems to have been inspired by the natural colors on the horizon line at dusk.  Any or all of these colors can be a great way to stretch your design budget by incorporating older items longer and re-using some of your favorite pieces.  Your interior space will stay trendy as long as you find unique ways to incorporate your older items with your newer pieces.  One of the key details to interior designing is finding statement furniture, such as older, vintage items which have a sentimental value or great ornate qualities to them.  By reupholstering them or re-vamping the stain or paint color, you can create a new life for most items, regardless if its a armoire, chair, or sofa. You can also keep your space current by adding just small touches of the current colors with pillows, ottomans, small benches and slipcovers. By being creative with your older pieces and investing in smaller new pieces it is easy to keep current and stay trendy without a huge investment!

Themed Rooms, How to Create One of Your Own…

Using a themed room is a  great way to help you create a unique kids room, an entertainment room, or dress up a small nook.  Many  individuals are keen to this idea because it can create a valuable quality to their home that reflects their personal style.  The look is not appropriate for all spaces, but can look fantastic if done correctly.

Kids Rooms

Kids rooms are the areas where you can have the most creativity and themed rooms become very important!  By creating murals on the walls one can create a great sense of fun for play areas and kids’ bedrooms.  When creating a room that uses a mural on the wall as the most dominate feature, you will want to stay more simplistic in your furnishings.  The remaining space calls for solids or small textures which coordinate with and complement the colors used in the mural.  This will allow you to focus more on the image.  If you would like to add a little bit of pattern  in the area you can add small throws or pillows for comfort.

If you are looking to create a space that more people in the house can enjoy,  a themed entertainment room would be perfect!  Most people tend to want to decorate their small throws areas with common themes such as sports teams  and movie reels.

Movie Theater Themed Room

Movie Theater Themed Room

Although the media room look is commonly achieved with media seating, this is not the only option available.  As long as there is some sort of tiering system incorporated in the room design, you can create a lounge style media room equipped with media room.  The tiering system is usually incorporated into a media room so that it can accommodate many eye levels without visual obstruction.  The original media chairs started as the now out- of -date bustle back featured recliners. Using more contemporary straight- lined sofas and chairs that range from 38″-42″ in depth will have the viewer cuddling up with their favorite movie buddy in a much more visually appealing space.  Check out the style of sofas that would help you achieve this look!

Small Nook Areas

Many people notice that there is often a small area in their home that seems a little boring and needs some sprucing up.   A great solution is adding a small mural which highlights the function of the space.  Wine cellars are great examples of small areas  in the home which you can enhance with art.

Wine Cellar Mural

By using the existing space and adding a rendering which can enhance its appearance, you develop a look which becomes very peaceful, high end, and uniquely yours.  Other small enhancements to consider in a space like this  are bar stools and small benches.  Wine cellars are often attached to small bars.  In order to complete the look, you can change out the  seat cushions on your bar stools so that they coordinate with your painted wall visually connecting both small areas  and your space will be completely updated.  Here at Fabrics and Frames we specialize in custom furniture which can be created to fit any space.  Whether you are decorating a bedroom, media room, or small bar area we have the solutions to help you create your new space with an up to date style while keeping all of your needs in mind.

2013 Year of the Snake

In the design world, there are many different things that can influence what your interior space may look like. We are often intrigued by other cultures and often want to bring a little bit of another country into our homes.  Asian cultures have always had an influence on what we do with our interiors, whether it be pagodas,  geometric key patterns, or animals. The current Asian look often influences our design trends.  2013 marks the year of the snake on the Chinese calendar.  This year, the year of the snake, will embrace steady progress and attention to detail, along with focus and discipline.    For many, having this symbol in the home will be a good omen because it will mean that your family will not starve.  Although this is alluding to the productivity of your goals this year and how hard work will pay off, this is a symbol that you will want to hold close to you and your home.

Year of the Snake 2013

So, How do I incorporate the snake symbol into my home?

One of the most common ways to incorporate the year of the snake into your home and still stay trendy is by adding snake skin on one of your items.  This particular look can allow you to bring out your animalistic side as well as create a good fortune for the rest of the household.  Check out some of the looks that you can use to incorporate this style within your home.

By adding small accents of snake around your interior, you create a unique look which is not too over-baring but still reflects your interest in the trend.  Remember that using animal prints should be treated as a “onesy” item and not take over the entire room.  Keep this look for a small chair,  an ottoman, or pillows.

If animal prints are not your thing but you want to incorporate the look with a snake, think whimsical.  There are many fun cotton prints that incorporate snakes in their design.  Most of these looks will be bright in color, but occasionally you can find some that have a more subdued look.

As you can see incorporating the snake design into your home for 2013 is not hard to do at all. Whether you want to go for a sophisticated look with patterned snake velvet or high-end leathers or vinyls or if you prefer to keep your space fun and fancy free there are many options currently available for you to choose from. Furniture That Grows with You!

When you find out that you are expecting a child,  designing a nursery is often at the top of your list. Buying all the things you want  in the nursery to help make parenting easier can quickly add up to be costly.  With all the extra expense a new baby brings to the family, many new parents do not to want to spend tons of money on baby furniture that will end up being donated or tossed out after a couple of years.  A great solution to this problem is to buy furniture that will grow with your child over time!

Most parents consider a rocker a necessity for the nursery because it will be a comfortable space where the new parents will be able to feed and bond with their child.     Investing  in a nice, comfortable good quality chair for a nursery seems extravagant to many because they feel that it will be a chair that will only be used for  a short time. A solution to this problem is to slip-cover a great chair in a fabric which works with your nursery’s theme, but upholster the chair in a solid fabric which may be more versatile for other areas of the home and can be moved once your child outgrows the nursery.  This will allow you to use the furniture around your home as needed for many years to come.

Nursery Rocker with Slipcover

Another great idea to incorporate in the space is a storage ottoman.  When your child is an infant it can be used for storing extra diapers and other necessities. Once your child is ready to start playing with toys, this ottoman will be a great way to tuck away toys when not in use and keep your home looking tidy.  As your child outgrows their toys, this ottoman can be used as an extra area to store linens or throws. It can also serve as extra seating when the need arises.

Kid Storage Ottoman: Creating this look in a versatile fabric will allow you to grow with it over time.

If you prefer a sofa in the nursery rather than a chair, then we would suggest a  new functional “Day Sofa Bed”.  Building a sofa which has a twin mattress as it’s seat cushion is a great way to create an extra, comfortable bed in the space and still be functional.  It is the perfect place for visitors to sleep or for you when ever the need arises. Slip covering the cushion will keep the sofa looking crisp over time. Once you no longer need a place to sleep in your child’s room, then it can be moved to a guest room or office. Check it out!

With all of these great ideas, why wouldn’t you want to invest a little more on quality furniture that will be able to grow with your family?  This will stretch your dollars overtime and save you from spending your hard-earned money on repairs or replacing the old, no longer useful furniture with new.  Remember Fabrics and Frames is the place to come for all your custom furniture solutions for all members of your family from the littlest to the oldest!

To Destroy or NOT To Destroy…?

One thing that Fabrics and Frames Furniture is known for is exquisite restoration of antiques. Once you decide to reupholster an antique piece of furniture, you will be taking its current value as an antique and reducing its market value.  A true collector  wants to keep antiques in their original form as closely as possible. If you are someone who is just an admirer of the craftsmanship and lines of the piece and want to make it more comfortable and usable then reupholstering is a great idea!Ducan Phyfe Sofa

Duncan Phyfe Sofa

In the past week we  had a  Duncan Phyfe Sofa brought to us for re-upholstery.  The owners are a young couple who did not fully understand what they owned.  After much research on the piece we  found out that the piece originally was manufactured around the 1920′s and is about one hundred years old.  The little hidden fact about antiques is that they are not always originals.  Just because it looks like the original does not mean that it was manufactured by the original person because there are many copies out there.  Although these pieces can be very old, they don’t hold the worth that some may think.  The only way that you would be able to determine the true worth of an antique is by getting it appraised by an expert who will determine the value by the wood used, where and when it was manufactured, as well as other technical attributes.

Today’s society tends to lean towards antiques because of two reasons.  There are two generations of collectors, “The Eclectics” and “The Classics”. The eclectics are a group of individuals who collect antiques because they wish to create a “call to attention” piece of furniture for the room and are enamored by the “antique” lines of the piece.  The majority of what is being collected today by the eclectics is Baroque Furniture, Duncan Phyfe Sofas and Chairs, and Mid-Century Modern pieces.  Individuals who buy antiques for the eclectic style are generally ones who refinish the pieces  in colored lacquers and use bright or contemporary fabrics for the upholstery.  Check out the look below:

Eclectic Sofa

Eclectic Sofa

This particular look is not for everyone, and usually is admired by someone who is artsy chic.  The classic collector would generally not like this look because it destroys the classic look.  One of the main arguments against this look for the classics is that the frame was destroyed with the lacquer finish.  This is definitely true but not irreversible.  If you generally like things to remain in it classic features, then you would probably want to use a small ditsy pattern or damask print and keep the original wood color.  These patterns were commonly placed on furniture pieces of this period.  You generally would not have seen a solid fabric on this style, unless it was a mohair velvet or tone-on-tone pattern.

Tone- On- Tone Antique Sofa

Tone- On- Tone Antique Sofa

Regardless of the direction that you want to go, reupholstering the original will alter the value of the piece. One final thing to remember is that if you do decide to use a traditional fabric to maintain the original style you should find a fabric that is reminiscent of the past and not try to use one of today’s traditional fabrics designs such as printed linens or chenilles. There is a lot more leeway when choosing a fabric if your tastes are more eclectic as the original look is no longer important. Choose a fabric you love but do not make a design mistake that will sacrifice the look of your antique frame.

Our young couple had a hard time deciding what fabric to choose for their antique sofa that was inherited from their grandmother. With our design help and fabric search we were able to find the perfect fabric that will make their piece stunning and their grandmother very proud!

Black and White…The New Inspiration in Design

The combination of  ”Black and White”  is a trend that keeps emerging in the design world almost every year in one form or another.  Whether you are one who follows fashion, interiors, or the arts, this look has grasped the attention of many throughout the generations because of the contrast aspect it projects.  As you flip through your favorite magazines you often notice  this combination  emerging throughout the ads because of its attention grabbing quality.

In the interior design world, the look is currently being used in way that enhances geometric patterns.  By creating labyrinths and patterns that are hypnotizing and trend setting, this look  invites the viewer to crave this combination in their spaces.  Here is a look into the year’s most talked about patterns and how they create bold statements in your interiors.

In the fashion world, the chevron (zig-zag pattern) got a lot of attention when Missoni branded this look as a trademark of his collection.  Since then the look has emerged into a pattern that creates a bold statement in the fashion, interior design and art world. Because of  its  simplistic pattern and contrast it will get the viewer’s attention quickly.  The contrast between the line weights of the design and the colors used are what allow this look to create hierarchy in the space.

Labyrinth Inspired Geometric Designs

Geometric designs are the latest rage in patterns.  These looks have been trending for a number of years in the design world, but have you ever wondered where the inspiration for this look came from?  Labyrinth patterns were commonly seen in the cathedrals, such as the Notre Dame de Reims.  This look was a symbol of the architect who built the structure.  Many other architects in different regions also created symbols and patterns into the ornamental features of the facades of their architecture thus creating a distinct symbol of the country in which it was created.  Today’s patterns are commonly pulled from Greek, Moroccan, and Asian themes.

Just like geometric patterns pulled from past origins, so did striped patterns.  There are many different type of stripes, but the most popular stripe is the awning stripe.  This is a stripe that is symmetrical in width and alternates two contrasting colors.  This particular look has been used since the 6th century during the Romanesque Architectural Period in Europe.  Check out how this look is used in modern times to create a chic trend setting look!

Black and White is a combination which has been and will be around for centuries.  It is a bold enough look which will generally create a statement in any design.  If you are someone who is looking to create a room inspired by this combination, then let Fabrics and Frame Furniture help you!  We have an expert staff ready to make any of your design inspirations come true!

Interiors with the Royal Treatment…

Downton Abbey is one of the year’s most talked about television shows for many different reasons.  One of the most intriguing things about this show is the Abbey’s interior and how the furniture of the Edwardian country house of Downton Abbey pulls from the French Providential Period.  When decorating in a more classical traditional decor such as this, you must understand that the interiors will not have that minimalist quality that the current trends of today’s interiors have.  Ornament and patterns seem to take over the room  when decorating in this very traditional style.  One thing that you must understand is there must be a lot of coordination when working with many different patterns.  Hue and scale are very important qualities to keep in mind as well as color because if these are not carefully considered  the look of the room will not become cohesive.

How do I create a room like Downton Abbey’s?

A traditional setting usually consists of a sofa, love seat,  upholstered chair or occasional chair.  The size of your room will determine the amount of furniture you are able to place.  There are many different origins of carved furniture and you will need to make sure that you pick French and English styled furniture from this period for this particular look.  The furniture of this period tends to be more petite and delicate  looking.  Many of these looks will come with a Queen Anne Leg or some form of Ball and Claw.  Occasionally you will find that a Chippendale leg will be used when a more sleek look is desired.

When choosing fabrics, a good rule of thumb is to start with one large scaled pattern, generally a tapestry or a large floral pattern.  Using  this pattern as your starting point you will need to pick smaller patterns with which to coordinate.  These will sometimes be referred to as ditsy patterns.  A ditsy consist of a small diamond or half-drop floral pattern.  Solids were not as popular during this time period, but when they were used they were usually a velvet, mohair, or a matelassè.  If you are looking for one additional pattern to complete the room, then a stripe or plaid could be a good fit.  Stripes and plaids are always suggested as a “either or” option. Generally when you try to use these two patterns in a room together, they have the tendency to compete with each other so we generally suggest to only use one.

Common Color Combinations for French Rooms

Black, Gold, and Red:

When creating a room that calls for drama, a common color combination is black, gold, and red.  The room mainly remains black and gold, but you add just a pinch of red in the pillows or small accent pieces.

Country French Room: Primary Colors

Although there are two major color schemes in a Country French Room, the most common one is red, yellow, and blue.  This look has a light and airy quality to it, leaving the room with the feeling of tranquility.  The colors are usually just subtle pops of color and enhance the furniture that is placed in the room.

This look generally appears to be more sweet.  Perfect for a bedroom or a small bathroom, this look opens the room with its light pinks and mint greens look.  Reminiscing to a French or English pasture with wild flowers.
