Chic Summer Patio Lounging

Summer is the time for reconnecting and bonding with friends.  Most of us  enjoy congregating around outdoor areas because of the warmer weather.  Regardless of temperature, there are many different activities which encourage interactions with others.  Pools, bar patios, and sun rooms are all areas which can be spruced up during the summertime to make your get-togethers more entertaining.

Since a common place to gather in the summer time is around a pool, you will need to make sure that your pool area is chic, functional, and inviting to your guests.  Although you can often find appropriate decor items on sale in your local store, these items are not always what you should use.  When you decorate for outside exteriors there are some factors to take into consideration.  Oftentimes we have areas in our backyard that are not shaded with awnings, structures, or trees. Fabrics are exposed to sunlight and adverse weather conditions.

Light is one condition that you cannot always control when it comes to your space planning of any interior or exterior space.  If a fabric is not light safe, the fabrics color will absorb the light and change.  Darker colors tend to turn a shade of brown and red tones will gradually get lighter,  while whites may start to yellow.  Sunlight is very damaging and can not only have an effect on the color of the fabrics but the durability can also be affected by the sun.  More delicate fabrics like silks and cottons are not able to withstand their strength over long periods of time, resulting in shredding of the material, so they should not be used in outdoor spaces.

Weather is a major concern for those who are decorating their exteriors.  When decorating for exteriors, you must take into consideration what materials you are using because mildew can be an issue.  Many think that when you cover a seat with light safe materials this will be the only thing that you must do in order to have your furniture last for several years.  This is not the case, you will also need to buy or create cushions using outdoor  foam that dries more quickly thus helping to deter mildew.  Since this furniture is used for outside furniture, rain and pool water can absorb into the foam which will create mildew and then spread into your fabric. Not all outdoor ready to buy cushions are appropriate for outdoor use!

With technology, many trendy and colorful fabrics are available which you can use to construct any outdoor living space.  The most common leading   outdoor fabric resource is Sunbrella, although there are many other fabric companies which supply outdoor fabrics. But be careful because some of them are not as reputable by offering both light fast and mildew resistant fabrics in one.  This product is mildew resistant, light fast, and also eco-friendly.   For those who own older Sunbrella materials, this company will recycle your old materials for you, allowing you to stay ” green” in your own dwellings.

Using Green Design Creatively…

In today’s modern world people are generally not as concerned with living in the “perfect” home as much as those in the past.  Today’s modern home owners often tend to lean towards a particular style in designing their living space, but like to incorporate sentimental pieces that have influenced their lives into the design.  With many different blogs and social media apps like Pintrest,  Casasugar, and Instructables.com to look at today it is easy to find lots of ways to use your sentimental items in resourceful and creative ways.  These online resources that are readily available are helping to create a world of DIY thinkers and designers.

Do It Yourself Design

Sustainability is a key issue which drives modern times in design as well as all other aspects of our lives.  Knowing that we are responsible for destroying the Earth’s habitat often influences the way we design our homes.  Although many of us don’t like to keep old things that we are no longer using in our homes, it is possible to use many of these vintage and unique items to create awesome projects that will give your interior space great character.

Two things that you need to determine is “Where you are decorating?” and”Who you are decorating for?”   Another key factor to consider is the size and scale of  the space that you are decorating.  The space will determine how creative you can be.  If you are living in a small space, building small niches in the architecture of the interior can help showcase the items that you collect.  Even though the items we tend to collect tend to be non-functional, we find that some functional items can be used as decoration as well.   Color coordinating items such as dishes, appliances, and towels will enhance the color scheme in your room.

Coordinating Shelves with Interior Space

Organizing is a great way to keep the space functional.  It is not always necessary to purchase new items to make your home more organized. By decorating with things you already own you can create a space which showcases your personality as well as being functional.  Once you have decided on which items will best suite your needs, revamping your older items can be the next step to making your home more uniquely yours.

Many times at Fabrics and Frames, we have an individual who loves and is very attached to their sofa, chair, or ottoman, but over the years it has developed a problem.  Sometimes the spring system in the furniture has started to give way or  it may be the arm on their favorite occasional chair is starting to become loose.  Whatever the case may be, we have developed solutions over the years to save your most precious pieces.  Although it is not always possible, we try to fix the problem without altering the original condition.  If it is not possible then we will have to reupholster it. We understand that vintage and antique pieces of furniture often come with history.  There is a reason why they are cherished, regardless if it is for the design or sentimental reasons.

Designing a new home does not have to be expensive.  By using creative solutions to enhance the look of what you already own is the best way to stay green and on a budget.  With the money that you save from decorating with items you already own, you can put money aside to reupholster or fix a piece of furniture that has needed some much needed attention and love for awhile.

Creating a Healthy Sleep Environment

Sleep is one of the most important things necessary for a person’s well being.  Sleep deprivation causes  fatigue, irritation, and headaches as well as a foggy brain.  A proper amount of sleep is crucial to your health, but for some people getting adequate sleep is very difficult. Often one of the problems is that your environment is not conducive to falling asleep because it isn’t comfortable.  A great way to ensure that you have a great night’s sleep is to create a space which invites dreaming.

SleepingWoman

The most common place for sleeping is in our bedrooms because this room is separate from the rest of the home which allows us to get away from all the activity in the other rooms.  When creating a space for sleeping it is important to focus on creating a calm environment.  Many people like  using white when designing a bedroom because it keeps the room feeling tranquil and clean and invokes the feeling of sleeping in the clouds.  Others like the comfort of  darker colors such as navy blue, charcoal gray, and black because the absence of light makes them feel like they are in a cocoon.

Both looks are very inviting for sleeping and the decision is based on personality.  For those who prefer a white bedroom creating a space which will wake you up peacefully with the rising of the sun.  This look is generally best suited for those who are considered “early birds”.  If you are not an early bird, but still enjoy the cleanliness of white linens in your bedroom, then you can keep your room dark with either black-out curtains or plantation shutters as the sun rises.  This will still leave the room nice and airy, yet allow you to block out any sunlight in the early morning times.

Light and Airy Bedrooms

For many, darker rooms appear to be morbid and eerie, but when you are designing a room that has the intention of deep sleep in mind, darker might be better.  There are ways to create a space which is still inviting, yet dramatic.  Creating the perfect ambiance for the space is important and focusing on the light  in the room is crucial.  Lighting must be place strategically to enhance special features such as art, a reading space, or treasured furniture.  Spot lights on dimmers will make sure that the room appears more inviting while still encouraging sleep.

Dark Luxurious Bedroom

After you figure out what interior look  appeals to you, you need to put finishing touches in the room.  Comfort is very important and because of this a bedding look must be determined.  Determining the style of your room, whether contemporary, traditional, or somewhere in between, will be a key factor. If you want a more contemporary look, you will notice that there will be less decorative elements, meaning no ruffles or flanges on pillows.  Most of the bedding will look simple and sophisticated using more solid fabrics.  Very traditional bedrooms will have “fru-fru” written all over the room with lots of details including ruffles, trims, patterns and lots of pillows.

Regardless of what look you want to achieve, Fabrics and Frames is here to help!  Offering custom bedding and accessories will help you develop a perfect interior space for your bedroom. We also can help you create custom beds, headboards, comfy reading chairs and storage ottomans to make your sleeping space one where you will quickly fall asleep and stay there! Sweet dreams!

Form and Function in Today’s Furniture Trends

In today’s society,  simplistically styled furniture pieces have become more popular.   Many individuals are using less patterns in their furniture and more in smaller accent pieces.  One reason for this is that it is more economical for furniture manufacturers to create solid pieces because the time involved in cutting the fabric is considerably less than trying to pattern match. It is too cost prohibitive to manufacture and ship very detailed, patterned furniture from overseas so most stores carry more solid pieces.

This is not bad news though because there can be many perks to creating a room by starting with a large solid piece.  When walking into a room which has mostly solids and textures, my first reaction is not that it is boring, but that it may be more enticing.   The reason for this is that the less  pattern in the room the less you will be distracted from the form of the individual pieces. The structure and lines of a sophisticated style will be more evident.  Many of the classic contemporary looks are often shown in solids because they have details in their design, such as tufts and pleats, that carry the eye all the way through the lines of the piece.  For most designers, furniture is art that is functional.  The thought process in creating a custom design is the same approach as an artist, the difference is ergonomics.

Chair Frame

When creating a custom piece of furniture, it is very important that its  functionality is well defined.  Louis Sullivan stated that “form follows function”.  If we create  furniture that has no function incorporated, it is almost guaranteed that the piece will be uncomfortable which would make it useless as furniture.   When creating pieces the height and depth of the piece are as important, if not more so, than the length which is what most consumers look for first. All elements of design must be considered during the creative process.

Another important criteria for you to consider when you decide to look for a sofa is to understand pricing.  Pricing is usually associated with quality and design.  The same look that you will see in lower end stores will not be identical to a similar one at a  high end retailer.  Although you may be looking at the same classic style in both lower end and higher end markets, the way it is upholstered and the materials used will be quite different.  Higher end pieces will generally give you many more years of good service. Today we live in a disposable world which is why many  lower end manufacturers design with economics rather than ergonomics in mind.

For a company like Fabrics and Frames who is known as a manufacturer of high-quality custom furniture and a superb upholstery shop, creating ergonomical, functional pieces is most important. We have seen many different qualities of frames throughout our 35 years and understand the difference between a great sofa vs. one that is not.  By properly analyzing your own unique needs and making educated comparisons, you will get a better product as well as a unique design that will best fit your lifestyle.  For those who enjoy creating their own look or need help envisioning a space, let Fabrics and Frames help!
