Precious Materials in your Interior

Trasitional Interior with Metallic Touch

Transitional Interior with Metallic Touch

When buying jewelry, one of the considerations is to decide if you are going to wear  gold, silver, or platinum. This is the chemical element that holds the precious jewels on the setting together.  So when creating a  design for your interior using the proper amount of element in it is the difference between making something look too gaudy or very valuable.  Metallic objects as they pertain to interior spaces can be the highlight of the floor plan because they create hierarchy among everything else.  Use too much in one space and they loose their value and become ostentatious.  The key to a successful design is to create in a simplistic manor.  During the traditional Renaissance times, ornamental embellishments in interiors where dripping with gold leaf designs to show status of wealth.  Although this look still pertains in some interior design movements, most individuals tend to lean towards a more contemporary way of thinking by using metallics to highlight other colors in the room.

Metallics are very influential with the creators of art, fashion and interiors.  This is why we are seeing them in our everyday trends.  From purses to pillows, the contemporary accent is what keeps our eye moving through the composition of a design which is one of the most important elements to creating whether it is art or interior spaces.

So, How do I create a tasteful  interior which uses metallics?

One of the key aspects to creating an interior design is to keep things simple.  If you are someone who loves metallic objects and wants to see them everywhere then make it the dominate part of your scheme.  This can be achieved by using metallics as one of the major players in the room, such as: sofa, tables, even walls and floors.

Create a tasteful look with a dominate flare by upholstering your straight lined sofa in silver vinyl.

If you prefer “just a touch” then place metallics in your artwork, pillows, and accessories.  This will give you a contemporary flare without being too overwhelmed. Here at Fabrics and Frames we strive toward pushing  boundaries on design when creating spaces.  We can create any genre of interior with a custom flare. Whether metallics are appealing to you or not, with our expertise we can help you create a room or entire house that is not only pleasing to the eye but also where you can sit back and relax in comfort!

How To Make Your Home Uniquely Yours

Throughout  the course of the past ten years, we have seen a trend toward more minimalistic designs in the interior space of a home.  Some years the trends were more in demand than others, but we have never lost sight of clean lines and simplistic styles.  As we venture towards a new wave in interior design, we see that minimalism is not necessarily what the public is demanding and  designers are meeting their demands.

Chic Interior with many accessories

Chic Interior with many accessories

Although we still would like to have a clean lined home, many individuals are turning towards “retro” and “vintage” details to give their home  one of a kind appeal.  In our lifetime, we often inherit items that are handed down to us and have no idea what to do with them.  We are faced with the decision of restoring them, revamping them into something else, or throwing them away.  Many times there is sentimental attachment to these items so we keep them and relegate them to a space where no one gets to see them.

The good news now is that because we are leaning towards a more inviting era of design and accessories, it is becoming more acceptable to have a busy, yet organized, shelf or table in your space.  The idea with such a space is to create an environment that is appealing to the eye.  This doesn’t mean that you have to decorate sparsely in your space but it does mean that you have to be well organized.  When creating an environment like this, you can place items which were once stored away safely, and incorporate a style which everyone will be able to enjoy.

Styled Bookcase

Creativity in decorating is key when organizing.  Yes, you can gather ideas from blogs and magazines, but the truth is that you may never be able to replicate what you see exactly, so improvising and creating what looks good to you is the best solution.  One suggestion is that it is generally easier to buy a few items and incorporate them in a display with items which are uniquely yours such as things that have been passed down to you.  Here at Fabrics and Frames we host a gallery from artists which are represented around the United States.  In our collection you find unique items which you won’t see in your neighbor’s house.  Sometimes collecting from an artist is a way to create a one-of- a- kind style.  Another way to create a unique environment is to upholster pieces in unusual fabrics  not seen in the everyday store.

Unique style in accessories and furniture

Whatever your taste may be, it should reflect who you are as a person.  Simplistic style is great for some, but allowing yourself to create using your own unique items and creating nostalgic memories can be a way to enjoy your heritage as well as your home!

Making your Dining Room Aesthetically Functional for You!

As more and more individuals are leaning towards a more contemporary lifestyle, the nature of minimalism has permeated our living spaces.  Contemporary designs are generally considered to be lacking ornamental embellishments.  As someone who has designed for many different genres of furniture styles, some advise is  to design for comfort regardless of style or taste.

When you design with comfort in mind, you do not compromise the overall look of the space for comfort. As you begin your quest for the perfect design you must find a niche between comfort and style to accommodate your area.  For this upcoming new year, the forecast of trend setting areas in the home is the dining area.  Although for the past decade or so, the formal dining area was seen as obsolete, the  need to have a space to entertain family and friends during the holiday season has risen in demand.

Randall+Parson+Chair

When scouting out for new dining chairs, a common dilemma is that the chair tends to be built so that hard-surface, poor quality, and comfort  are prime attributes to the aesthetics.  The new dining trends will highlight softer, larger, and an overall more comfortable experience.  Although you will see a difference in price from the moderately inexpensive chair which can possibly retail around $200 each to very expensive custom pieces, an investment in dining chairs that will last and be comfortable is almost a no-brainier…

Custom creating a design for a quality chair can be what your space needs.  Since dining chairs are not as large as fully upholstered chairs, you are able to add pattern to them and continue to have a peaceful environment.  Although the trend generally has solids pushing the way for design so that small details such as: tufting, nail heads, trims and buttons can primarily be the focus.  Remember that this is not the only reason why solids are used in furniture upholstery.  When a manufacturer decides on a particular fabric to be on its design, the majority reasoning behind a solid is to keep the process simple thereby less expensive.

Trendy-Dining-Room-in-Turquoise-Kitchen-Decor

Solids by their nature do not have patterns, meaning that there is no pattern matching to take into consideration in the manufacturing process. It is difficult to create a unique chair that is specific to you room if you are limited to a solid fabric unless you add embellishments. Even if you like to use solids because of its simplistic style, a way to have your chairs maintain their high-end appeal is by creating a hybrid or calico look.   Hybrid designs  are when you have two different fabrics incorporated into one design.  Dining chairs usually have solid in-backs and seats with a pattern out-back.  A benifit to this type of style is that this is an easy re-upholstery job when your pattern becomes out-dated or worn. Another benefit to this technique is that the interior fabric where you sit can be very durable and the exterior fabric can be more decorative giving you the best of both worlds.

Here at Fabrics and Frames we specialize in high-end quality design.  Creating custom looks for the past 35 years has allowed us to perfect our designs so that they last a lifetime.  Investing in something which will keep your family, guests, and friends comfortable is something which we take pride in.  With a lead design staff who specializing in today’s trend setting techniques, the choice of getting a well manufactured USA made product is unarguable.  With general lead times of 3-4 weeks, you will find that Fabrics and Frames will be your go-to place when it comes to pleasing your aesthetic needs whether you are looking for dining room chairs or an entire room of beautiful upholstered furniture.

Symmetry in your Interior

When consulting with a new client I have have found that before we can collaborate on the design of a new space it is very important to find out what type of design my client  will feel most comfortable embracing in their space.  Symmetry in the space is an important aspect of the design plan.  Currently in design the trendy thing is to be less symmetrical or asymmetrical.  By adding bright colors to a space and embracing the idea of an asymmetrical design, you can create a look which redefines the color block look.

Many individuals already use this concept of asymmetrical designs in nail designs and fashion, but this look is just beginning to emerge in interiors .   To embrace this look you need to first choose one color which will become the dominate color in the design.  From there you will carefully choose other colors which work with this color as well as embrace the overall feel that you are aiming to achieve. It is adamant that your space brings you comfort whether it is energy or a sense of peace so your accent colors are very important to your final design. By choosing this design style, you are able to keep crisp, clean lines giving you a space with an overall style that appears to be more contemporary.  This will allow your accessories, which are the icing to the cake, to stand out and show off their unique qualities to both you and your guests.

Asymmetrical Colors in Interiors

Please keep in mind when designing, the look is not only about color.  Symmetry is also important to keep in mind as a guideline to placing objects in the room.  Well-spaced planned interiors  will allow your client to use existing furniture and mix it with new pieces.  Although it would be ideal to only use furniture that fits perfectly in your space, the reality is that we generally have to work with what we have.  There are many times that someone will have three chairs and one sofa, or a scenario where you have 2 different chairs in the room.  This is a situation in which asymmetrical decisions must be made.  Take into consideration that when the chairs are separate from each other it is ok for them to be in two different patterns.   Having odd pairs in the room will allow for more seating as long as your space is large enough and doesn’t become to crowded. Remember the most important thing in designing a space is that the client is comfortable with the finished room and feels joy when walking into it!living-room-57710-1900

Here at Fabrics and Frames we think outside the box and try to accommodate our clients with design solutions which fit their needs.  There is no right or wrong way in design but as designers we try to use our knowledge and expertise to give our clients a space that is not only ergonomical and beautiful but also functions for the individual.

Heart of the Home.

As summer begins to fade, and autumn enters our lives, the temperatures begin to drop and the leaves begin to change colors. Just as the weather changes so do our concerns.  Changing of our wardrobes is one, getting the kids back to school another, and finally the holidays arriving.  As we know, the season spring generally is known for sprucing up and cleaning out our homes, but what do we need to focus on during the fall and winter months?

Autumn Kitchen 2013

This season is full of family get togethers and events.  With Halloween, Thanksgiving, and Christmas just around the corner, you may start to ask questions such as “what shall I bring to parties, and how can I impress my guests?”  Both of these  lead us to the heart of the home, the kitchen.

The kitchen is the place where we do most of our cooking and gathering, regardless if its making Halloween candies, cooking a Thanksgiving dinner or baking Christmas cookies.  This is the space in your home that will get the most use. The kitchen is generally the gathering place for both your family and your guests.  Many individuals don’t realize that this area is not always as comfortable for their guests as it should be.  Small touches such as banquets and barstools are ways to incorporate more seating in a space to make the area more comfortable.

inviting kitchen with plush barstools

If you find that you have all the seating space that your kitchen needs, you may want to reconsider what shape your dining chairs are in.  Even if you think that they are in great condition because the fabric still looks new, what you may not notice is that your foam has begun to break down from all the wear and tear of people sitting on them over the years.   Foam generally will have a lifespan of 5-7 years before its starts to break down.  Even if this is a space where you don’t generally sit, your foam can still be damaged.  If you have chairs which are over 7 years old, the inside may start to harden, leading to crumbling. Or it can break down and become flat. When this starts to happen you no longer have the support in the chairs to make you and your guests comfortable.

Broken Down Foam / Old Foam

If you notice that your once comfortable chairs are now hard or have become less supportive, reupholstering is a great solution. Unfortunately it is not usually to save the original fabric if your foam has worn out, but with the expert designers at Fabrics and Frames, you can find a fabric that is comparable or that will coordinate well ensuring that your chairs remain clean, taught, and comfortable for the holidays. This would also be a great time to update your look to add a bit of excitement to a room that is used by everyone who enters your home and you will have your guests gushing with complements!

Bringing Fashion into your Interior

This  week Fabrics and Frames is celebrating their 100th blog posting.  A common theme throughout many of our blogs has been the way designers seldom stick to one genre of design.  Many of them tend to influence many other areas, such as graphics, interiors, and art allowing their artistic talents to be spread to an even larger audience.

Fashion in Interiors

Since Fabrics and Frames offers thousands of different fabric choices through different vendors, we often notice that many fashion designers have teamed up with some of the leading brands in interior design.  Some have decided to team up with particular furniture brands which offer exclusives to their designs, while others offer their fabrics through specific vendors like Kravet, S. Harris, and Robert Allen.

Issac Mizrahi for S. Harris

Since we are a manufacturer of custom furniture and assist many furniture companies around the Dallas metroplex, we have found ourselves working with lines from several designers.  Regardless if its Jean Paul Gautiers, Missoni, Issac Mizrahi, Jacklyn Smith, or Sonia Rykiel we have noticed that quality lines hold specific detail in the fabrics and when they are juxtaposed with craftsmanship it allows the overall product to look fabulous.

Since we consider ourselves to be artists of design, we like to support others who share our artistic hunger to create some of the most innovative and trendy decor.  That’s why we offer fabric lines through high end vendors to allow our clients choices on how they want their homes portrayed to their guests.  If you are looking for someone to help assist you in creating your dream home, please contact Fabrics and Frames.

Inspired by Wood

Over the past couple of years as I have skimmed the pages of many home and design magazines I have noticed  that one of the latest trends in design is restoring and reusing wood.  With an imaginative mind, you will find that there are many different accents that can be created out of wood.  Using tree stumps for ottomans and tables seems to be a popular way to design with wood.  There are several suppliers that create and sell items like this for your home. You can also create your own by out sourcing someone who has recently chopped down a tree or has extra firewood.  If you are someone who is a little more creative and has more energy, you can create your own special piece by sanding and painting the wood to give it a more finished look.  It will hold presence in any interior space and stand as a conversation piece.

Another idea which will have a similar look, but has a more upscale design are acrylic side tables with tree branches inserted into them.  This look is primarily for the more artsy chic person who may be inspired by glamour interiors.  By giving a more contemporary feel to what could be a cottage style, this item will have your guests wondering how much you spent on such a unique item.

Accessories are usually  the last things that you should place into your interior space because it is like the jewelry for an outfit. Your primary furniture should take precedence in the space planning of your room.  Here at Fabrics and Frames we have seen many different items come through our doors.  Through the years we have found that we are the functional source for a handyman’s dream.  We have had several customers over the years who have built their own beautiful wood furniture pieces, but did not have the expertise to make gorgeous cushions to complete their projects.  That’s where we come in and help them with the functionality to their creations.  By building cushions and throw pillows to create a more finished look to their bench styled furniture we have helped make their designs more comfortable and usable.

There are many different items that you can create using natural materials like wood.  Imagination is the source to creative green design.  When you create something by reusing an item that would be wasted otherwise, you are helping minimize our footprint on the Earth.  If you have found that you are in a middle of a project that Fabrics and Frames can help with, please let us know.  We are your source for cushions, table runners, and throw pillows that will help coordinate all of your styles together.

Neon Interiors

Today’s latest designer trends incorporate the color spectrum’s brightest colors.  Neon colors can be seen from fashion, to art, and even in upholstery.  Since these colors are so vivid and vibrant, this color trend tends to have a call to action appeal and rapidly draws the eye to the area where the color is presented.

Kleurentrends-2013-Milou-Ket-Bright-Kaleidoscope

Often the idea of using bright colors in an interior space will scare the average decorator because it is difficult to manage and has a short lifespan.  If you are daring and choose to decorate using this color scheme, then a tip is to use neon colors sparingly in areas that will highlight a great accessory, art piece, or small area.  This will keep you from overdoing the color, yet it will con-temporize the space.

neon-interiorgreen-yellow-furniture-table

When you use these colors in a minimalistic way, you should incorporate them with neutral color schemes.   Just keep in mind that neon colors are currently a trendy way to update your home and trends typically do not stay around forever.  By keeping these colors limited to smaller accessories  it will be easier for you to dispose of the trend once it is past its prime.

For those who really want to use the color in a larger piece of furniture, carved framed furniture is great for the neon look.  When you decorate with antique styled furniture, your interior space becomes much more eclectic if you choose modern accessories to incorporate in the space.  One of the most classic trends that has been around for many years is lacquered furniture frames and is suitable for these neon colors.  This look allows you to choose your favorite color for the frames, regardless of shade, and incorporate it in your interior.

Lacquered Furniture Art

Lacquered Furniture Art

There are many different ways to use great color in your interior.  Although using neon colors is not one of the most traditional ways to decorate, it is currently one of the most trendy ways.  Another popular way to incorporate neon colors in your room scheme is by using patterned fabrics.  Most often fabrics incorporating very unique colors can be very expensive.  A great way around this is to create your own design , then getting an online fabric company to print it onto a fabric for you.  This will ensure that you will love the finished product and give you a sense of accomplishment as well.  Once you have your fabric, you can place it on small occasional chairs, curtains, or small ottomans and pillows.  Fabrics and Frames is a furniture manufacturer that allows customers to bring in their own materials. So if you choose to design your own fabric or are just searching for the perfect one, Fabrics and Frames is the place to get all of your interior design trends implemented.

The Masculine Approach to Interiors

When decorating a home or room for a man, looking at men’s clothing trends is a good place to start. If you open up any men’s fashion magazine like GQ, you will find that tweeds, suit plaids, and checks are always the front runners in fabric choices that make a man’s wardrobe so chic.  Although many times this particular look is very simplistic in color and pattern, textures can be the highlight that makes this look so fantastic.

Although many interiors that are created for women are filled with color, a man’s interior should be somewhat more simplistic in color.  By focusing on shades and tones instead of color is one of the most common differences in creating a bachelor pad vs. a bachelorette’s pad.

First Step to creating a successful Male Interior is knowing which color scheme to choose…

The majority of the time when I speak with men about fashion or interior space, their preferences are usually dark colors for their interior space.  Black leather is one of the most common textiles for the man’s dwelling.   Using black leather leaves little to the imagination. Often you can incorporate this look with other more striking  patterns and designs to create a much more sophisticated look. There are many other colors which pair well with black including white, grey, navy blue, brown, and red.

When using darker colors for interiors, a major factor is to consider is how balance, tone, and weight refer to color.  Darker colors tend to throw off the balance of colors because they have such a heavy weight. When you use them with lighter colors, the contrast in the room must be balanced well so that it doesn’t draw attention to one area of the room and leave the other area left to be unseen.

This is an example of a well balanced Black and white room. By incorporating awning strip pillows onto the white sofa it pulled the from the darker areas of the room and created a more balanced look with less contrast. The pictures are also creating the same type of look.

Black-themed-dining-room-table-and-chairs

This is an example of a unbalanced interior space. Because the seating area is so dark and the accessories are so light, the room looks bottom heavy. Drawing attention away from the accessories and toward the seating area is unbalanced. A way to allow this to flow better is to incorporate something which brings both light and dark together, possibly a patterned accessory.

Second Step: Pulling accessories which represent your masculine achievements, hobbies, or interest.

Bragging Rights are always a way to get peoples attention and men are more prone to be competitive.   Whether  you are bragging about your own achievements or an achievement of someone close to you, you probably have collected items which have become an interest to you.  For many males  art, sports, and alcoholic beverages are areas which a man may be interested in.  If you are decorating for a man, you could choose items in these areas to represent their unique style.

Masculine Artwork

Masculine Artwork

Step 3: Masculine Patterns

When decorating an interior space which has a traditional purpose to it, you would commonly not have lots of  checks, plaids, and stripes together because they can detract from one another.  When decorating for a bachelor’s pad this is not the case.  Scale is a very important thing to consider, if the patterns are different scales (small, medium, and large) you will find that the patterns will start to work together in the room.  Often based off of the tailoring and style of a man’s suite it is a great look and can be very sophisticated!  Many men like to mix and match patterns together from their pin-stripe jackets, checkered button-up, and novelty inspired pocket square.
